A major study published in the Lancet found that smoking caused more than one in ten deaths worldwide, killing more than 6 million people a year with a global loss of nearly 150 million disability-adjusted life-years. A study by Jha and colleagues argued that the best way to combat tobacco in South Asia was through raising taxes.
