This report presents a synthesis of findings from public opinion research that review causes for first-time use of tobacco and vaping products. This includes motivating factors for use (device features, available flavours, social benefits, cost, and curiosity) and pathways to tobacco and/or vape use identified in opinion research (e.g. perceived health impacts, peer pressure). Identified factors should be considered in the development of interventions to meet tobacco reduction goals by 2035.
