Smoking cessation services are generally offered as one-time limited services with little or no follow-up cessation support. Many smokers take years to quit smoking, even when they have expressed a strong desire to quit. OTRU conducted a 12-month randomized trial to assess the impact of a long-term engagement intervention (i.e., monthly emails) on smoking and cessation outcomes among a sample of Ontario smokers. Overall, the intervention group remained highly engaged in the monthly emails throughout the 11-month intervention period (65%+ opened emails). However, this study did not find a significant association between the monthly emails and quitting at follow-up. Further study should investigate different types of long-term engagement messages to improve long-term cessation outcomes.
