Prevalence—COVID-19
OTRU conducted a survey of over 7000 youth and found that a majority of youth increased their use of substances including cigarette smoking and vaping over the COVID-19 pandemic and that 55% of youth increased their use of two substances, indicating a need for increased prevention and cessation efforts among youth.

Ashley Clift and colleagues conducted a rigorous study that controlling for selection effects and found that smoking was strongly causally associated with the risk of severe COVID-19.
