The Population Impact of E-Cigarettes in Canada: A Simulation Model
Although e-cigarettes can be a helpful tool in smoking cessation, they can also facilitate smoking among people who were never smokers, especially among young people. Therefore, controversy remains whether e-cigarette use results in a greater benefit at the population level than the harms they may cause. The Population Impact of E-Cigarettes in Canada: A Simulation Model webinar examined the costs and benefits of e-cigarettes by applying a simulation model that accounts for the changes between products and the differences in relative harm. The speakers discussed how the underlying assumptions of the model drive differences in population impact on health and health care costs and demonstrate how policy can be applied to improve population benefits.
Speakers: Michael Chaiton, Anasua Kundu.

Quitting Cigarette Smoking after a Menthol Ban: Results from Ontario
In the past two years Ontario, along with other provinces, has been implementing world-leading regulations on restricting flavours in tobacco products including menthol, but how well have these policies been working? Many countries around the world, including the United States, are considering implementing menthol restrictions and results from the Canadian experience may be influential. This webinar presents the results of evaluations of these regulations using wholesale sales data reported to Health Canada, and a long-term cohort of menthol smokers assessed before and after the ban, presenting the first long-term evaluation of the effects of a menthol ban.

E-Cigarette Vaping: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly – Evidence and Practice
The e-cigarette policy environment is developing rapidly. This webinar focused on three crucial questions about e-cigarettes:
- What happens to young people (particularly non-smokers) who vape?
- What happens to adult smokers who try to quit smoking cigarettes by vaping e-cigarettes?
- What is the state and likely effect of e-cigarette promotion and advertising in Ontario?
In addressing these questions we presented the latest evidence from published studies and findings from three of our own studies:
- Cohort study of youth and young adult vapers and non-vapers
- Concept mapping study of adults who try vaping to quit smoking
- Point-of-sale study, based on 50 stores

Electronic Cigarettes for Smoking Cessation: What’s the Evidence?
Original presentation date: February 27, 2017
Health Evidence hosted a 90 minute webinar examining the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation.
Muhannad Malas and Robert Schwartz led the session and presented findings from their recent review: Malas M, van der Tempel J, Schwartz R, Minichiello A, Lightfoot C, Noormohamed A, et al. (2016). Electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation: A systematic review. Nicotine & Tobacco Research, 18(10), 1926-1936.
Cigarette smoking is among the top causes of preventable death and disease. Electronic cigarettes have been increasing in popularity among smokers who report using them for quitting or reducing smoking. This review examines the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes as cessation aids. Sixty two articles, including RCTs, experimental, longitudinal and cross sectional studies are included in this review. Findings suggest there is inconclusive evidence due to low quality of research.

Original presentation date: October 27, 2015
Despite a growing body of research on electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), there has been much debate about the effects of their use. - A systematic review of the literature related to their health effects and effectiveness as a cessation aid
- A review of e-cigarette use in Ontario
- Findings from a panel of adult smokers and a survey of youth and young adults on their perception and use of e-cigarettes
- A social media analysis of e-cigarette message exposure, reach and content

Original presentation date: May 12, 2015
This webinar was presented by the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit (OTRU) under the auspices of the Program Training and Consultation Centre (PTCC).
It is frequently claimed that tobacco taxes cause smuggling, but does increasing tobacco tax necessarily increase contraband? To debunk the myth that taxation leads to contraband tobacco, the speakers will discuss findings from the literature, present data on Ontario trends in tobacco taxes, consumption, prevalence and contraband, compare tax and price data in Canada, and critically review an earlier report from the Fraser Institute.
In this webinar, Dr. Robert Schwartz and Bo Zhang provided evidence to address the following questions:
- What is the magnitude of the contraband cigarette problem?
- Does increasing tobacco taxes necessarily lead to an increase in contraband tobacco?
- What does recent history tell us about the impact of taxation on tobacco products in Ontario?
