E-Cigarettes – Cessation
A contrasting set of observational studies plus a Cochrane Review of the effectiveness of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation were published in the past month. Zawertailo and colleagues at CAMH and OTRU found that e-cigarette smoking was negatively associated with successful quitting among participants in STOP at primary care clinics. However, an English study (Beard et al.) found that e-cigarette use was associated with an additional 18,000 ex-smokers. The Cochrane review of randomized controlled trials of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation found that e-cigarettes seemed to be beneficial in quitting but the quality of evidence was still low.
